They reside near the Sacred Black Hills of South Dakota. The total number of native North Americans is approximately 1.5 million, of which around 100,000 are Lakota. The Lakota, Dakota and Nakota Nation (also known as the Great Sioux Nation) descends from of the original inhabitants of North America and can be divided into three major linguistic and geographic groups: Lakota (Teton, West Dakota), Nakota (Yankton, Central Dakota) and Dakota (Santee, Eastern Dakota). Their territory covers some 200,000 km2 in the present day state of South Dakota and neighboring states. The term can refer to any ethnic group within the Great Sioux Nation or any of the nation's many language dialects. The Sioux are Native American and First Nations people in North America.
